Belgium
Residence in the heart of Europe

<Back to Belgium Main Page>

Belgium is certainly one of the most attractive countries in Europe to live in. It offers economic and political stability, with a relatively low tax regime supported by many exemptions. Belgium offers a high-class quality of life and a safe and healthy environment, in a historic and cultural heritage that is one of the most respected and visited in the world.

Belgium is keen to not only attract large, but also small- and medium-sized companies, as well as private economic contributors to its society. Investors, entrepreneurs and financially independent persons would normally be able to obtain a residence permit within a reasonable time-frame, thanks to a track record and related experience in hosting international organizations, companies and staff. Depending on your individual circumstances, citizenship may even be obtained after 3-5 years of legal residence in Belgium.

A Belgian residence permit

As all residence permits are subject to case-by-case approval by the government, in some cases additional motivation and evidence regarding residence in Belgium may be required. For non-EU citizens a long-stay visa application is a standard requirement.
A Belgian residence permit enables free passage to the 15 countries of the Schengen area: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. All these countries, except Norway and Iceland, are European Union members.

For the first 3 years, residence permits are issued on a temporary basis, with an annual administrative renewal procedure that includes a simplified, official validation of the original conditions. After 3 years, the temporary residence permit becomes indefinite and is valid for 5 years, subject to a simple administrative renewal.
This indefinite residence permit allows both EU and non-EU citizens to officially apply for citizenship. Citizenship is also granted on a case-by-case basis by the government and officially confirmed by a Royal decree.

Residence for financially independent persons

Belgium also offers financially independent persons the opportunity of becoming a resident. Sufficient funds, a sustainable monthly income, permanent housing, and full health insurance, in accordance with Belgian standards and laws, are the main prerequisites.

Residence for investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals

With its open economy, Belgium is keen to attract not only large, but also medium- and small-scale businesses. As a result, investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed persons are normally granted a residence permit as part of the establishing process of their economic activity by means of a private or public company or even a foreign branch office. For non-EU citizens, application for a so-called Professional (Identity) Card is a standard requirement.

Residence and personal taxation

As a resident of Belgium, your global income is taxable. However, an extensive number of treaties with over 80 countries is available to avoid double taxation. Belgium has no private wealth tax and an extremely low (0-3%) inheritance tax.
Capital gains on shares and real estate are not taxable. Rental income from private real estate is also exempt. Personal tax rates differ from 25 – 50% of net income, after deductions.
