In general, having your main residence in Belgium means your global income is taxable. However an extensive number of treaties with over 80 countries is available to avoid double taxation.
Non-taxable personal elements
Belgium is one of the few countries left with no private wealth tax.
Capital gains on shares (also in case of a controlled company) and real estate are not taxable, nor is rental income from private real estate.
Personal tax
Personal tax rates differ from 25 - 50% on net income after deductions.
Each taxable person is entitled to a standard tax-free allowance. In registered partnerships with a full dependent partner, a transfer of income to the dependent partner in order to provide maximum tax relief is allowed.
Extra deductions are applicable to replacement income, from sources such as corporate or private retirement funds, health and employment insurance, etc.
Further personal tax reliefs are applicable for dependent children, students and family.
Inheritance tax
Belgium has an extremely low inheritance-tax regime whereby, depending on personal conditions, a rate of 0-3% is applicable.
Additional personal income
Income from life insurance is taxed at 3% x 15% of the amount deposited.
Withholding tax on dividend is 25% and on interest, it is 15%.
