Residence in The Bahamas

<Back to Bahamas Main Page>

The Bahamas is one of the world's most attractive no-tax jurisdiction for private residence, located just 60 miles from Miami at its nearest island, Bimini. It has a good infrastructure, particularly on the main islands of New Providence and Grand Bahama, and there are excellent flight connections to the USA and to Europe. There is no personal or corporate income tax, no capital gains tax, no sales tax, no withholding tax, no employment tax, no gift tax, no inheritance tax, and no probate fees in The Bahamas.There is a strong demand of foreigners for second or primary homes in The Bahamas. Accelerated consideration is given to applications for annual or permanent residence for substantial investors and to owners of residences valued in excess of USD 500,000.

Although situated almost entirely within the tropics, The Bahamas have a very pleasant, distinctly oceanic variety of tropical climate. There are no great extremes of temparature; the winter months are the driest and sunniest, with slightly lower temparatures, lower humidity and frequent sea breezes. Most of the islands are low-lying and their annual rainfall is rather lower than that of some other islands in the West Indies.

Foreign Owners of Second Homes

Foreign persons may acquire residential properties in The Bahamas of up to five acres without prior Government approval. Such acquisitions are required to be registered in accordance with the International Persons Landholding Act. Home owners are eligible for a Home Owners Residence Card, renewable annually. This card will facilitate entry into The Bahamas and entitle the owner, his spouse and minor children to enter and remain in The Bahamas for the duration of the validity of the card.
